Thanks for the info, aliguth and frogman14.  Will have to examine the options.  The hull ferry sounds good but could be very hard to get a cheaper connection with the sometimes very expensive Irish sea crossing.  Don't really mind the journey down England as we would do the bulk overnight.

Can't wait to go to Alsace,  I spent a year (1989/90) in Strasbourg as a student so have had a taste of the area and its people.  I don't think there is anywhere else like it.  I'm always raving about it.  I would like to explore all the things I didn't get round to doing.
