I thought that people were renewing passports now because from October you will have to present yourself in person to apply for a new one or to renew. Has anyone heard of this? It was mentioned on Radio 4.
i havnt heard anything but if its true i hope its at local post office as not everyone can/will travel to liverpool passport office and surely they wont/cant expect them too

never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you on experience
I'm pretty sure that passports can be renewed from either six or nine months before expiry, and whatever is still left on the old passport is allowed for on the new one. It's all explained on the application form.

i guess the reason travel agents like you to have 6mths left is in case you have to try and stay after you are due home, if your passport expires 1 week after you are due home and you end up in hospital you could tecnicaly be deported this would mean you are an illegal which could void your insurance. just a thought
Also (and I dont know all the ins and outs of this) they are going to go all high tech (as in america) with the passports soon (by the end of this year I think is their aim) and basically charge all of us for it! so the cost of a passport I think is going to nearly double so bear that in mind too - if you do have time to get a new one it may save you some money to do so. Im thinking about doing mine soon - (mine runs out next year some time) because I think they extend it by whatever you have left on your passport too!
It's down to the country you are visiting as to whether you need 6 months remaining on your passport. Some won't let you through immigration otherwise.
As for the new passports, it won't be long before we have to be chipped and immunised the same as applying for a pet passport. Instead of "Anything to declare?" it'll be "Are you up to date on your rabies injections Sir?"
