I think it's the companies who sell gas alarms who keep this going - you still see adverts for them in the caravan magazines, each quoting a scare story - either caravanners, home owners, or lorry drivers being the victims. They obviously continue to make money because people buy their products, so when sales go slack they resurrect the story again and again.
