I totally agree re the cable cars - plumeting to the ground and hanging from a thread, comes to mind..... I love mountaineering books (Pyschovertical by Andy Kirkpatrick is great) and really want to see some big mountains but I am far too old to be doing any kind of bivvying! There seems to be so much in the area that just one holiday is not going to be enough.

re: the busy times and end of the holidays - we arrived in Annecy 16th of August we would have liked later but due to the kids returning to school it was the latest we could do.
When we first got there the area was packed out and would say for that first week it was still quite busy, it did quieten down and there was a lot less queing later in the month so it was much better.
I think that next year, the kids are back to school on Mon 5th Sept which hopefully will give us from Sat 20th Aug - Sat 3rd Sept 2011 so maybe the crowds won't be so bad. The second week could be good for visiting the attractions of Chamonix where the queues might not be so long.
I'm ok on ordinary cable cars when skiing, but the ones that span from one mountain to another - arghhh... was in Peisy Valandry one year and just looking at the cable across to La Plagne made me feel sick.
Interestingly when skiing I have no problems with chair lifts, but found them more scary in the summer, maybe because plunging into snow doesn't seem as scary as plunging into rock - although hubby reassured me that both would probably kill or paralyse you!
