in the past, when i had petrol cars, using 100 or 98 octain fuel definately delivered better MPG. i used to drive around europe for my job and filled up many times and drove many miles. i have used injector cleaner with octain booster in my motorbike and could definatey feel the difference.

my shogun will run on vegetable oil, so i am told, but i usually use supermatket diesel and it seems to run fine.

what does cause problems with EGRs and DPFs is short journeys.

we hava a Navarra at work and i have been putting a forte additive in it to try to rduce its smoking, its terrible, i took it to a diesel expert to try to cure the smoking because Nissan said there was nothing wrong. the diesel 'expert' recommended the additive and that he doesnt recommend anyone using a diesel for short trips.

unfortunately the Navara doesnt get much use and gets moved in and out of our warehouse or sometimes taken home by my colleagues unless i use it on longer trips.

Short journeys cause DPF problems, I asked our postman if they had problems and he told me that none of their vehicles had any problems, their fleet are all Fiats.

In Germany the supermarkets don’t sell fuel, just petrol stations.

except this one https://goo.gl/maps/pvPx8dva2HWpDkYr7

it was an Edka supermarket next to the diecasting foundry i was working at 2 weeks ago, it sold fuel also.

Sorry - none of the places we’ve been to had fuel stations at supermarkets but obviously some do.

DPF`s have got a lot better over the recent years, with development, to cater for short journeys. The Euro 6 in particular. True some of the older ones are prone to issues. But all benefit from a motorway run of 20mins in 3rd at no more than 50mph..

Re diesel types, maybe worth a mention that almost 80% of fuel in France is dispensed via supermarket forecourts. I use a mixture of Shell and Tesco in the UK..Best of both worlds I guess

The deluded diesel user will have far les trouble with the EGR valves and injectors than the know it alls

As a non deluded diesel user for the last 15yrs, I am happy to say I have had absolutely no problems with EGR valves or injectors.
I buy where ever is cheapest when I need fuel.

Same here. Always the cheapest. Have never had any issues.
