If the campsite has a supermarket its generally cheaper to buy a 4/6-pack of icecreams and throw away the ones that melt than to buy a couple of icecreams at the bar!
We are heading to the south of france in two weeks,(two adults, two kids-seven and four)i have been picking up a few extra 'holiday'items while shopping for the past few weeks ie.cereal, pasta, rice, sauces and all usual condiments and non perishables we would usually use at home, i have also packed the kids favourite treats, biscuits, cool pops and juices, hopefully we will only have to buy dairy, meat, salads, vino and bread while away, also i find it much better to bring a picnic basket when we go out for the day as the kids only pick at the food when we eat out, another tip i find helpfull is to calculate the cost of petrol/tolls before you go and keep this seperate, also bring juice pots and snacks for the kids for the drive.

Christine
lol , we do that .i remember forcing myself to eat 3 cornettos from Auchan one after the other rather than throw any away .
We're off to Burgundy area at the end of June for a month so 'Thanks' to everyone for their input on this forum...maybe the exchange rate will have improved by then but - hey - it's our main holiday and we are using aires and France Passion sites so we're saving money there!
Happy hols everyone...

This sound rather to famliar! We do this at Asda at home when we are just desperate for an ine cream!
We have just got back from France staying in the Lot and Garonne near Marmonde and also a few days near Bezier near the Med. Used my Nationwide credit card for most purchases and was getting between 1.15 and 1.17 euros to the pound with no conversion charge. Diesel ranged between 1.11 euros to 1.18 at supermarkets and up to 1.29 on motorways. We bought most of our wine at Geant and paid between 2 and 3.5 euros for their very good Club de Somelier range. Eating out we were able to find three course meals for 13 euros at lunchtime sometimes with wine included. We did eat out a few evenings and found some restaurents where you could get a very good 3 course meal for about 23 euros.
Since this thread is about people's recent French experiences, have anyone just spent any time cycling in the Burgundy area? We're looking to use the canal towpaths and quiet roads and I'm interested in any maps/routes and any other information as well as prices!!
Thanks if you can help.

I recommend the Voie Verte there. We were there a few years ago and found more cycling path than we could cope with! It links many good touristy places as well as passing near some impressive "caves" (the winey ones!). Google "voie verte burgundy" for masses of info.

Many thanks John. Will do as you suggested right away! We cycled through the Loire Valley 2 years ago and found the local cycle maps there just brilliant so hopefully the French Tourist Board are just as 'on the ball' in Burgundy.
We stayed at Chateau L'Eperviere at Gigny sur Soane in Burgundy last year and the campsite had lots of local cycle trail maps in reception. Not being cyclists I didn't look too closely but our neighbours on the campsite bought some and said they were really good.
As on our last French experience, we will be using aires and France Passion sites, all of which are free (except the small annual fee of £25 for FP). In a month, we only used 3 municipal campsites which cost very little!
Our idea this year as last time, is to cycle each day and to move on each evening unless there's more to explore.
We have only booked our eurotunnel passage one way and plan to stay about a month.
Where are you off to this year?
