Blimey who dredged this post up...I was getting more and more confused reading through posts about people stockpiling euros in case they tumble with a hung parliament...and then realised the posts were from 2010!!!
Incidentally the www.xe.com exchange rate is almost 1.26 to the £ today (the rate Halifax Clarity cards use).

We actually discovered ALdi and Lidl while we were in France several years back... and now of course use them at home too.
Meats were a fraction of the supermarket cost especially barbecue type meats like turkey kebabs and sausages. We also found them to be less crowded than some of the supermarkets especially on holiday 'changeover' days when the supermarkets were full of newly arrived tourists who were trying to stock up for the week but did not know their way around!
