We have a sanef tag and very happy with how it all works. We didn't even realise we were a toll road this year till we got to toll booths. Not a problem just drove through and the barrier opens. Got charged £5 after we got back so no big deal.

Towing a loaded trailer tent it's so convenient not having to stop start.

Our ATMB arrived within a week.

Loads of French drivers use tags ... I hardly think there'd be several providers vying for the relatively low numbers of UK drivers over three summer months.

It's mostly French commercial users that use tags. Obviously good for companies at it allows driving staff to use autoroutes without needing a means of paying but it simply is not true that tag use is widespread among private French motorists who use autoroutes only rarely for holidays & so on.

It does not matter who, or who does not use tags. If it suits you then use one...SImple.

I use one because my wife has mobility issues, so it saves me having to get out every time, and we will be embarking on our third trip this year where autoroutes are used......And quite frankly I can't be ar..d!

When we first started using the tag all of 12 years ago it seemed that nobody else French or British went through the reserved lanes. Now after 3 weeks in France this summer it felt like almost everybody was using the tag lanes (well nearly).
So unfortunately given a couple more years there will be no point in buying a tag because the motorways will be clogged up by French commercial travellers, British caravanners and Belgians

This is a complete generalisation based on our experience this summer and therefore is fact.

Ken

Well in contrast, we got our Tag back in 2008, and along the Eastern autoroutes, we have not noticed an increase in use, but to be fair the Eastern autoroutes rarely get busy in anycase.

Once on the "Route du Soliel" though, traffic is busy as ever, and it is along that stretch down to the Med, were the Tag comes into it's own.

But even along that stretch in July, the Fast Tag lanes have been free flowing, whilst ques build up at the regular Toll lanes.

And yes Blueexpo97, I can't be bothered anymore!

Must be where and when we go then. One car in front constituted a traffic jam.

To be fair, Mon Ami, it's rarely more than one or two in front of us too (Although I think there were 6 behind us at the end of the little episode in my OP! LOL!). As you know, we go first half of September.

Thus far, it's been one trip to The Dordogne, and two to the Vendee coast. All From the Chunnel. It's likely we'll be going down the eastern side next Sept, all the way down, so Francais' comments are appreciated.

For us, I'm thinking comfort/ease/relaxation, as opposed to speed.
For our (non-camping) trip to Spain each May, we always pre-book seats on a plane for a similar reason, as well as hire a car rather than rely on these airport transfers, taxi's or public transport... and just off-airport too, to avoid the chaos and queues at the on-site places!!
Not the cheapest option, of course, but it makes for a more chilled out journey, which suits us.
Before the roof box episode(s), I too thought I'd never bother with a Tag. Just not busy enough when we go. Now Muckerette has to get out and reach up, we'd still be ok... now we know, so I can position the car accordingly.
I know for a fact "we'd survive" if we continued camping annually in France without a tag, but if it makes things a little more relaxing, even for a little extra outlay, then it's certainly something for us to consider.

... Having said that, if we do get one, and the bloody thing doesn't work...

I'm sure it will. I think for us, it's just something extra to think about, and so far, going for 20 years to the south and west, we've never had a problem with queues.

I think your "lorry" experience has prompted a think about ease of passing through, and I totally understand that. We've never had that happen, and these days the last thing I want is anything more tech and sophisticated than chucking coins in or pushing a note in. As I do 99% of the driving in France, it's Helen doing it and we've just never had an issue with either queueing or where the ticket comes out.

Clearly, many folks here think that they're the best thing since sliced bread, so what the hell do I know

The ironic thing is next year, for the Swiss motorway element of our mini grand tour, we'll need a vignette. But that's not a voluntary thing. You have to have one. I *think* it serves as the toll, but pre-paid.

These days I like to just fill my mind with images of clouds scudding, and the occasional dancing girl. It suits me better really to delegate all responsibility for anything to the distaff side

I gained all of 15 seconds today with a Tamar Bridge tag into Plymouth while the National Express coach driver in the next lane was searching his pockets for cash. Then he got into a bus only lane and sailed by me. Life is so unfair.

I'm still relatively new to this side of things, so very much still trying to work out what does, or might, work for us!
