Has anyone stayed there? We are thinking of having an overnight stopover there (or nearby if anyone has recommendations). Is there much to see around that area?
Thanks.

You're right on the edge of the 'Volans de Auvergne' - the volcanic region of the Massif Central. There's the Puy du Dome, and many others - views from the tops are fantastic, but it can cold up there even in mid-summer. It's a lovely area, and more than worth stopping - possibly for more than just an 'overnight'.
There are loads of overnighting hotels, if that's what you want - every chain is represented, and most of them are just off the autoroute junction. We stayed in one, but I'm sorry I can't remember which chain it was! We've also stayed at the campsite at Chateau La Grange Fort, which is just a bit further south near to Issoire - can recommend it, too, for an overnight stop, but it does tend to get busy.
Hi there, we stayed about 30 mins higher up on the motorway than Clermont, at Camping de la Filature in a village called Ebreuill. Loads of people use this site as a stop over place and as has been said, this area warrants a fortnight's holiday, not an overnighter, that's for sure.
See the thread a couple of pages back about different areas of France as I did a long write up there about the Auvergne.

Several possibilities. It depends on where you want to go after.
Continuing south just after Clermont Ferrand there are possibilities in Issoire. The exit before Issoire would lead you to St Nectaire where there are a few charming campsies (15 mns driving from the exit and no doubt several even before reaching St Nectaire (e.g. Champeix). Mind you this is a beautiful region. St Nectaire is a very good entrance for the Massif du Sancy.
Also left of the motorway there are several campsites in villages, some actually on the river (I think the Tarn is there already).
The Cantal area is beautiful too. Both are especially rich nature areas, although little towns like Besse en Chandesse (Sancy) and Salers (Cantal) are medieval fortified old towns, very well preserved. Also several prehistoric and medieval caves/grottos, like the Caves of Jonas, which served as castle in the dark ages. The castle of Murol is nice too, with enacted stuff.
Again it's mainly an area with beautiful and varied nature, springs, but some very old remains and old bathing centes (hot springs). La Bourboule is an example of a 19th century still active bathing centre with 19th century boulvard, and a nicely busy one too.
You will either totally love the region or think it's dull.
