We usually take out travel insurance but reading this I wonder if it is worth while? I thought only the emergency treatment could be recovered. Can anyone advise on this before I get my policy?

Son broke arm V badly last year in Brittany. Local hospital in Quimperlé took x-rays and then quickly stuck him in an ambulance to Lorient. Emergency op and 3 day stay in hospital. EHIC paid for everything except the x-rays and the ambulance which came to about €150 total I think. Travel insurance picked up the rest.

BTW what is the French fascination with administering drugs in suppository form? Some visitors came along just as son was screaming the place down.
"He in a lot of pain?"
"No, the nurse just gave him a suppository!"

I would definitely take out travel insurance anyway. It is very cheap if you shop around on the internet. If you are involved in an accident and have to be brought home by air ambulance you could be paying for it for the rest of your life.

Dunno, when I was very young and a lot more bolshy I tried to explain the law of gravity to a French pharmacist intent on giving me suppositories for a sore throat!

Actually the theory is they're absorbed more quickly where the sun don't shine. Hmm.. not sure I go with that really.

I got campylobacter in Austria although they diagnosed gastric flu at the time.  Thinking back I was given suppositories too!  Must be a mainland Europe thing.

Definitely get travel insurance, I would never go without it.
