Has anyone been here? When I flew to Stockholm last week I saw lots of islands as we were coming in to land. Today I am visiting Turku in Finland - I flew in on a puddle jumper so I was low & slow enough to have a good look. It looks fantastic -thousands of islands with sandy coves. The water is very shallow so it will be warm in the summer. I've been to pretty much everywhere mainstream and a lot that are not, but I was captivated by the possibilities here. My Finnish hosts said it is great but I would welcome a 3rd party perspective. Anyone?

Praps I should also mention that MoominWorld is near Turku. Gosh, I've not heard of the Moomins for years! My 5yo has never heard of them... Daytime telly is not what it used to be...
I caught a Viking Line ferry from Stockholm to Turku a few years ago and it was great, the islands you are referring to are the 'Aaland Islands'.
Although I didnt stay in Turku I drove to Lahti where my family live and it is great, I would reccomend a visit there.. Great sporting city and lots of lakes to visit!

I don't think midgies would be a problem on the islands. We have been to both Sweden and Finland, but never to the islands, but they look lovely. Expensive with a caravan, but good with a tent. Go for it!
There will most probably be mosquitoes in the island areas however most sprays and creams available from pharmacies will help with this!
Do check out accessibilty for a car and caravan on some islands and routes although generally there are no problems. The local tourist information offices will reply to your emails in English although do not make your questions difficult grammatically- keep questions simple!
It is a lovely area and well worth the visit- try enquiring at Turku about the "Ruissalo Camping Grounds"
