We are travelling from Dover to Dunkerque in July, and as it is our 1st experience camping abroad we were wondering Belgium or France? We would preferably only want to travel 1-2 hours from the port any suggestions? Preferably near a beach would be great!

Belguim for cheap Fags and Tobacco at Aidenkerke: France for cheap wine.

The further South you go the better the weather tends to be. France goes further South than Belguim so it's France for me!

If you only want to go a couple of hours--you have a choice of turning left about 15mins to the Belguim border or turn right down the French coast-in Belgium they will speak English--in France they wont but it has more charm---personally I would go about a hour down the French coast to between Boulogne & Berck-sur-mer--very 'French' 'cos its mainly French tourists & campers from the inland towns-plenty of campsites---if you like the waiters & campsite receptionists to speak English go into Belguim-first town is De Panne--if yoove got kids theres a big funfair-Plopsaland--no shortage of campsites--you can also go into the Zeeland province of Holland its only an hour up the road & Bruges is worth a visit--if you take bikes--Belguim has cycle tracks-France dosent--get a map of the area & Google the town names for info--

Depends what you're after. If you're into beer, Belgium has the world's finest, IMHO. Lovely people as well.

Either ! If it's your first trip abroad, you'll not go wrong in either direction.

If you're looking to be 1-2 hrs from the boat, you'll not be guaranteed great weather either direction really - North Normandy and Belgium will have similar weather.

Have you considered around the Caen area though ? You have a tremendous amount of attractions near there like loads of D-Day museums, WW2 beaches, Deauville/Trouville/Honfleur, the Bayeaux tapestry, even Mont St Michel and the nearby Zoo Champrepus are only an hour away to the West. Caen is about a 3.5 hr journey from Dunkirk - you're still not guaranteed weather here, though it is a little bit farther South.
