Hi all. Im taking the family on our first camping trip ever on the 1st August , traveling from Harrogate to Dover. Were getting the ferry to calais 8.oo a.m. ish on the 1st. On the way to Annase were gonna stop in Chamagne for a few nights. Any sight recommendations, tips advice and knowledge on the both areas would be very much appreciated as I am slightly bricking it Here. Also need the instuctions for a litchfield tt. got it up but if take it down think ill have trouble putting it up again. thankyou.

No problem. If you are staying in Champagne could I suggest Reims? The centre is full of fabulous old buildings and the Cathedral is not to missed. Stunning. We stayed at La Ravoire which is 344 miles from Reims. Your first views of the lake are amazing. Geneva is only about 28 miles away but if you go, remember to take Swiss Francs as it's nigh on impossible to find anywhere that will take the €. Also for parking meters. Slightly further afield is Chamonix & Mont Blanc. Well worth the effort. The spa town of Aix-le-Bain is another worthwhile trip. Take the D127 on the way back for spectacular views on the lake & town below. HIt my link below if you would like some photos.

I lived in Annecy for quite a while. Annecy itself is beautiful and a visit to some of the better known ski resorts in the area would be well worth a trip too. Le Col du Petit Ste. Bernard is a little further away, but it's where they train the mountain rescue dogs. The Mont Saleve just outside Geneva is a fantastic place to go mountain biking as you take your bike up in the cable car and ride down! Geneva is well worth a visit, as there is a lido there and the Jet D'eau (worlds highest fountain). Further up the shore of Lake Geneva is Yvoire which is so old it looks like Hansel & Gretel lived there. Great restaurants everywhere, try the donkey sausage, its excellent. There is also a lido in Annecy, a huge Casino, and trips around the lake are fab too...A slightly longer day trip worth considering would be a trip to the Jungfrau near Interlaken but this will take a couple of hours or so heading north towards Zurich. Again, very picturesque and worth it.
Ski resort of La Clusaz is nice in the summer, small and friendly with great alpine walks.
Best I can come up with at short notice, but it's a fantastic part of the world. Enjoy

another vote for Reims - why don't we have regional cities like that?
Stayed by Lake Annecy about 8 years ago. Some superb walks and gob-smacking scenery if you take some of the roads that go away from the lake.
We hauled our three up a mountainside. There was a fabulous meadow at the top with a cottage and a big shed. A student lived there all summer and made cheese for the owner who visited once a week to bring him food and take the cheese to market. The kids still talk about it. And the picnic that we took where we ate on a tiny island in a stream and cooled the drinks in the water.
But the main memory was the horrendous queues along the main road that goes along the lake. We tried to go in other diections as much as possible.

Looking to Italy (Lac de Ledro, 9km from Lake Garda) 2008 and looking at Annecy as a half way stop (?one week). Is it drivable or to much for one leg (with trailer tent).
Or any other suggestions from seasoned travellers would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't dream of trying to drive that far in one go - but then I think anything over 250 miles with 2 drivers is not a holiday but more of a knackering dash.

Paul, where are you starting in France ie Calais, Le Havre? and at what time?
I have driven it from Le Havre and Calais in one go many times, quicker from Le Havre but you have to negotiate Paris. On average about 9 hours drive. Depends how much long didtance driving you are used to or prepared to undertake.
So if you are arriving in France from an overnight ferry at say 6.30 am you would be able to do it pretty easily. We are doing 450 miles to Biarritz in a few weeks in one go from St. Malo.
Lest us know what you opt for.

For the last couple of years I have driven from Yorkshire to southern France and Austria/Switzerland. This year we head to Italy, stopping a couple of nights at Luzern, then, after Garda, onto South of France, using Annecy as a stopover on return. I do all the driving and my kids accept the journey and are good travellers.
If you enjoy driving it really is not a problem on French motorways, if you dislike the driving I would think again!

I think it is one thing to risk nodding off at the wheel when it is just me in the car, it is totally different when the family are travelling. Why risk it?
Starting at Calais (cheapest ferry option) travelling to Italy for the long stay but want to stop off at least halve way. Have 3 drivers so sharing driving. Got 4 weeks in total so thought drive off ferry, one week mid/eastern France, onto Italy then back into france for 4th week.
Just can not decide whether the french stays should be 1 or 2 centres!

LOL...I know it's a serious issue...but the noise and bickering in your car must be waaaay less than in mine, absolutely no chance of me nodding off
