just been watching Rick Steins french Odessey repeated on TV. The scenery is stunning. Would love to visit the walled city that I can never spell let alone say. Can anyone recommend a smallish site in the area. Lots of the coastal sites look huge which we dont like. Sorry to be a bit vague never thought about this area til now.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
There are enough campsites of all sizes and descriptions around this area to suit everyone - i.e.2 in Michelin, 9 in Caravan Club Guide etc., etc. No need to book, just arrive for a couple of nights and then you can have a day exploring and find your own special site for the rest of your stay!

There are loads of sites along the Canal du Midi - we've stayed at some. Will get back to you tomorrow with some names.
Will you be posting the details of sites in this thread, that would be good as we are thinking of going in September. Have had a look in the books for sites, but it's always better to have somebody's own experiences. A few years ago we went right down to Vias and then cycled from there along the canal to Beziers (and back!). Found it really relaxing and this year we want to visit different parts, ie Montauban for example.
Thanks in advance.
we enjoyed it there 3 years ago, we went early July before the peak rush.
Thanks Bev + Jon, have had a look and sounds good, although the last review on this site is rather negative. But then again, that was in the peak season, July, we wouldn't be going until September, so hopefully no noisy evenings from the bar.

We stayed at Caping Labanau only last week. it's a beautiful camping a la ferme about 10 miles south of carcassonne. We shared the entire site with one Belgian couple and it was wondeful. A river runs around the entire site and there is a natural lagoon to swim in. Facilities are good although basic and in peak season you may find they can't cope with large numbers of campers, although the farmer did say he's only busy late july to mid august. website is http://campingdelabau.free.fr/Version%20anglaise/default.htm
That looks lovely - I'm going to pass it on to friends who are going to Carcassone in late July, it's just their sort of place.
http://www.site-france.com/languedoc-roussillon/aude/campings/camping-le-martinet-rouge.htm We've stayed here, near Carcassone, and that was nice - but it's a while ago. We've also stayed at http://www.lesbergesducanal.com/ which is bigger, but OK - and Camping Neptune at Agde, walking distance to the 'end' of the Canal du Midi - and a lovely walk to the beach at Grau d'Agde, too. We've stayed on a site at Trebes (can't remember the name), which was between the canal and the Aude (but watch the mosquitos) but never gone further inland than this. Sorry, not as many as I remember, but we've been to some more than once. The old Cite de Carcassone is lovely - we found evening the best, because the crowds are less, and you can have a meal at one of the restaurants there.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
