Hi I'm changing my plans of camping in this rain sodden island and instead intend on hoofing it down to le sud de france. I quite fancy one in Languedoc near the spanish border. But that's a big journey and I'm not sure how to break it up.

Any suggestions on a cheap stop over site not far off the route down there woud be perfic!!

Cheers Jon

What route are you going to use?  We usually go Dover/Calais, then skirt around Paris, across to Evry, on the Francilienne (E104), then down through Nemours,  Nevers, Moulins, Grannat and on to the free autoroute (A75) down from Clermont Ferrand, over the Millau viaduct, and then down to the coast.  A good stopover just north of Clermont Ferrand is the municipal site at St Pourcain - which is literally just off the route we use.  There are others, though, and I'm sure you'll get more recommendations.  It's also worth a detour into the Gorges du Tarn, for another stop, just to see the spectacular scenery there!

If you are going a different route, then it would be useful to say which way you're going.

There are so many cheap hotel chains all over France such as Formule 1, Etap and Hotel B&B that we never bother pitching a tent for stopovers. A room in Formule 1 with shared facilities is around 27 euros and around 34 euros for ensuite in an Etap or Hotel B&B. They are always close to the Autoroutes and cheap food chains, have secure parking and can be booked online.

We have booked a F1 for our stop over on the way back from Spain and it has cost 39 euros per room per night.

Have to agree with Carol and Caroleeeee.

Tried formule 1 for the first time time this year and will never put up a tent for a one night stop over again !

There's a Formule 1 directly on the autoroute just south of Clermont Ferrand - at Issoire - we've stayed there, and it's not noisy - just very handy indeed for a quick start the following morning.
