We're off to France on the 18th August, haven't decided where yet (somewhere warmer and dryer than the UK!), and are wondering if we're going to run into peak holiday season?

If you look at the price of pitches/rentals on sites you get the accurate picture of demand. 18 - 25 seems to be medium season, 25 - 2 seems to me low and after seems to be out of season - or words to that effect.
WE like to go for the last 2 weeks of Aug because it prolongs our summer, the queues are shorter than rest of summer hols and the prices have fallen.
This year it may well be kick starting the summer -
The first two weeks in August are the busiest so you should find the main peak is starting to ease off by the time you get here. France has a bank holiday on 15th so you may find the weekend you arrive is busy but after that, should be ok.
You need to know that many of the sites cut back on their facilities for the last week of Aug. Big **** sites with a large % of Brits and Dutch tend to keep going - but the French will be gone.
