If you plan to do most of your travelling late evening, by the time you get to the roadworks at luton you should get right through them.  We've come that way late at night and have only been held up once.

Another route is m6 m1 a14 m11 m25 to dartford tunnel. but i don't think the roads will be that bad late at night. Also it does depend on the day of the week you're travelling.
