Our tent and camping equipment is covered under our home contents insurance. We had to add it specifically, but it is covered for theft and accidental damage. It didn't add much to our policy.  

All our real valuables though (DVD player, money, kids computer games etc) we don't leave in the tent as to be honest that is asking for it to be pinched. We have a little "safe" thing in the car under the seats where we keep passports etc and we keep the car locked 24/7.

We put stuff like portable DVD player in the boot of the car. Camera, mp3 player and SatNav is always in my backpack anyway if we are out. Passports,creditcards, other documents etc ,we rent a safe deposit box. Most of the big sites do them.
