hi, just wondering if many of you use motels for overnight stops. we have used campsites for the last 2 years but find it hard work pitching the tent for 1 night and packing up for early starts. would love to no of cheap motels with secure parking for a family of 4. also does anyone know if you have to arrive by a certain time and do you need to pre book in high season or do you take a chance and turn up?
look forward to your replies.

Hi, we did Le Havre to Carcassonne this year and used Formule 1.They take up to 3 in a room but depending on the age /size of your kids you could maybe squeeze into one room . It was very cheap - I think 35 euros - but you can check on their website. We stopped at Saintes on both journeys - handy for the autoroute. Parking was okay - we ended up clamping the trailer tent and leaving it in the car park while we went doe some food.Only probl;em we had was no loo in the room - okay it was only along the corridor but you had to remember your key pad number to get back in - or jam a croc in the door-tee hee!
Hotel BB take 4 to a room
Book now - family rooms book out quickly
turn up any time - reception open until 2100 then
Payment/code dispensing machine outside talks english
Breakfast is VFM but scrambled egg is pot noodle style.
We have used them so much I actually enjoy the pot noodle egg
Here's a link to all the budget hotel chains: http://www.eurapart.com/budget.html there's a list at the bottom, with a link to each chain's website. We've stayed in several of them - even with the caravan in tow on two occasions when we couldn't find a site open! Most reasonable sized towns have at least one of these chain hotels somewhere, and towns and cities just off the autoroute often have several of them on the route into town from the motorway. There are also lots of family run hotels which in France can be very cheap indeed, sometimes cheaper than the chains, per room, but these are obviously not so easy to find.

hi, thanks for your replies, i will look into all of the mentioned. we are with the caravan and camping club which will book hotels along side the campsite but we dont want to be tied down to stopping at a pre booked hotel especially if we feel ok to drive for longer.
You can book BB Hotels online and they can be cancelled on the day, you would need to check the time, but earlier in the year it was 7pm. I cancelled a hotel at 5pm on the day of reservation and I wasn't charged.
The majority of BB Hotels have a locked carpark. They sometimes surround the hotel, so you can park your car near to your room.
As stated previously, if you need a 4 person room, they do go fast, so consider booking & cancelling at a later date if not required.
Other chains in France, Premiere Classe, Accor, Ibis, Campanile all worth a try.
If you let people know your itinerary you may get more detail - we stopped over in rennes last year, about 100k of the ferry at st malo. Studio appt was about 70 euro's and was very nice, with underground secure parking, although tricky to find in the centre. Hotel france reservation.com is good
