Autoroute service sations are no problem as you pay at the cashiers where our cards work. The péage (tollbooths) take plastic or cash.

Some shops/petrol stations ask for PIN (code sécrete) others they just swipe as our chip/PIn is not always compatible!

see previous post - we also have had trouble using some petrol stations (in towns or villages and at hypermarkets) where our credit/debit card was not accepted in the automatic machine. autoroutes - never had a problem.

The only advice I can give to those that had problems with chip & pin is to time visits for when the cash desk is open. Most supermarkets is 9-12 and 2-6 or 7 Monday to Saturday, and some are open all day. Unfortunately, to get the cheaper fuel prices, it takes a bit of planning!
