I raised this subject last summer. We booked to go to Val de Cantobre last July but unfortunately had to cancel due to circumstances out of our control. However, we are off there for the first two weeks in September this year. Just wanted to hear from anybody who has been recently and what their thoughts are in terms of access and manouverabilty? We have an 8m twin axle. Also wanted to hear of any reccommended stop over sites close to main route on the way down and best route from Calais.

We went to Millau in 2002 and looked at that site. Nice site, excellent facilities and good restaurant. However we decided not to stay because the only pitches available where a little tight for our outfit (7.2mtr). Also we thought the site just a little remote for our liking. Although near a main road it would have been a bit of a drive to get to the main areas. The site is quite steep but terraced with flat pitches.
From Calais to avoid Paris go to Rouen via A16 and A28 then onto Orleans via Evereux, Dreux and Chartres. Take the A71 to Clermont Ferrand and then A75(free) to Millau then D991 to Nant (winding).
You are looking in excess of 600 miles. Half way is a site in the town of Salbris just 2 miles off the A71. Very easy from the autoroute and an ideal overnight stop.
Been to Cantobre lots of times (perhaps 20 in all) - and personally I wouldn't think of taking the D991 - although it appears to be the 'sensible' option if you look at the map. I'd go on, over the Millau viaduct to the La Cavalerie junction (47) and take the D999 (yes 999 not 991) - which is much less stressful, more straightforward, and will take much less time. There's a bit of a steep hill as you descend into Nant, but all the corners have been widened. Take the D991 when you want a 'ride out' - it's a lovely route, but not one to use to arrive on site - makes the last bit of your trip very stressful!
Alas, progress Val. The new viaduct/autoroute at Millau hadn't been built in 2002 and as we went to look at sites there first the D991 was a natural choice. Will definitely agree about that road and that was one of the reasons we decided against the site.

Hi Harry - the first time we went, we did exactly what you did! We were exhausted when we eventually got there! Every time after that we went up the old road out of Millau, and used the La Cavalarie route. We always went out of peak season, which meant the Millau traffic nightmare was not so bad, and we always used to stop at the 'Jasse de Larzac' on the causse for a drink.
Shropshirewolf: It's a lovely site and worth the effort of getting there. Apparently this year they are adding a second pool, with slide and jacuzzi down on another level. There's no doubt that the route up through the site is tight, but there are some enormous pitches, particularly down on the terraces to the right of the pool (lovely views, too). When Clare and Francois had the site he was usually on hand to help manouevre on to the pitch, and I'm sure the new owners will be equally helpful. They used to allow you a drive around the site on the 'cart' to choose a suitable pitch - ask if this is still an option. Hope you've got your Camping Cheques - Cantobre takes them from last week in August onwards. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay - we have, every time we've been.
We have been emailing the new managers at Cantobre about a possible stay the last week of August, they are great, quick to reply (except they had problems with their internet connection last week which hopefully is sorted now) I advised them what we were looking for pitch wise and for our dates they have sent us detailed replies about indivdual pitches eg sunny, private, size in metres etc. We are still undecided whether to stick with the 2 weeks we have booked in the Loire or split the holiday and go down to cantobre for the 2nd week. We went a few years ago and loved it, echo comments about the long road from Millau but if we go we will be trying out Vals route over the Millau bridge nd off at La Cavalarie. Incidentally we met the managers at the NEC show ast August and they are lovely friendly people.

We were there last summer and are returning again this year. The new owners helped a few people manouvre onto their pitches and were extremely helpful.
Val, we had a terrace pitch to the right of the pool and would echo what you said about the views - stunning!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
