We have a Calais-Dover ferry crossing booked at the end of May 2008 but a recent change of plans means we have to leave site 1 or 2 days early. Whilst this is not a problem for the site, the ferry crossing will be a different day.

Does anyone know whether you can turn up early at Calais and get the next availiable crossing. If not can you take the Eorotunnel without pre-booking?

Many thanks in advance.

Why don't you contact the ferry company as you can normally amend crossings although there is usually a fee its got to be cheaper than going by eurotunnel.

We have made ammendments to bookings in the past and sometimes we have been charged an admin fee, sometimes not. If you plan to take a more expensive crossing they will of course charge you the difference.

We usually book our ferry at this time of year for 2 weeks in August at peak times and have found that the ferry companies are very flexible if our plans change.

Also we have phoned from France with both Hoverspeed and Norfolkline to change our return with no penalty, although  we have usually opted for cheaper crossings.

Its perfectly routine-just phone 'em & they will change it-£10 ammendment fee on P&O--its a good idea to make a note of the French phone number on the website in case you need to phone while in France--

Hello Caboman. We arrived two days early at Calais for our booked crossing with P&O. We had to pay £40 to swap to the same price-band crossing(same crossing but two days earlier). Tried various ploys such as waiting for a shift-change of staff and using the booking hall terminal/portacabin booking facilities. No joy, still had to pay. Sent e-mail to P&O when we got home to complain..no success. The previous year we were charged £10 and I got it back. Other years we have never paid anything to swap.

I would suggest that you do the swap here before you go.

We have used Norfolk Line for the past 4 years and never came back on the booked ferry - always earlier from a week to a couple of days. We just turned up and were put on the next ferry - no problem, no quibble and no charges. Well done NL. I cannot recommend them enough and the ferries are fabulous new boats. Dover/Dunkerque - so this is of no help to you - I just had to let you know of our experiences with this problem.

As others have said you can change ferries but there is usually an admin fee and you will have to pay extra if the crossing is at a more expensive time. Your idea of turning up at Eurotunnel could prove expensive as you will pay top price for the crossing.

Just because you change to the same time slot on a different day doesn't mean that the price will be the same as you booked because you pay the price for that crossing as of that day.

Therefore if you know now that you need to make a change I would do it now as the prices are more likely to be the same - I changed from Sat to Sun and there was no charge.
