I was lucky enough to once again cross to monchsjochutte and spent the night there.(58 sfr half board if memory serves me right) all in all I was lucky with the weather.Ive climbed kili and mont blanc when much younger but now mainly have to make do with easy routes due to arthritic knees so getting the train to do all that descent is a definete advantage!!
So we left the day before the Schynige Platte route opened, shame, would have loved to have walked further than we did. Never mind, next time hopefully!
How interesting that you spent the night at the Monchsjochutte. We walked it there and back, of course at first had to get used to the difference in altitude, and stop at regular intervals, but we did it, and it was marvellous! All the more so, as OH had a single bypass 2 years ago, and although he is, and has been for a while now, back to normal, he was very pleased with himself that he was able to walk there and back without problems.
We were certainly very taken with it all, and are planning to go back again the same sort of time next year. The walks are superb.

A better route can be done from Zermatt upto the summit of the breithorn at 4168 metres,get the cable car to klein matterhorn at 3884 metres and from there its about two hours up.You will probably need a guide as there are crevasses on that route but there available locally.Its harder than monchsjuchutte but ive seen kids as younge as 10 up the summit and grannies in there 70s up there.The views of the monte rosa massiff and the area are truely amazing and well worth the effort.Definetly the easiest 4000 meter peak in the entire alps.
Walking in the bernese alps by Kev Reynolds is an excellent guidebook for easy,medium and hard walks in the area published by cicerone.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
