It is a good idea to have a look at ferry offers in October - usually there are some tempting 'book now' offers. We usually look in early October, and over previous years have got some real bargains.
We don't book campsites at all - but we travel in May/June, and then again at the end of August/beginning of September, and we've never had a problem getting on a site. It can be different, though, if you're holidaying during peak season, and want a particular site. However, outside this season, you can get some really good discounts with Camping Cheques, Touring Cheques, or an ACSI card - and just be free to move on if you don't like an area or a campsite.
