We're using the eurotunnel on an early evening crossing and are looking for a site max 40 mins drive from the tunnel on the way to Paris
We dont want anything flashy, its just to park the caravan for a kip and a shower in the morning. Travelling with kids were worried about using the aires as a stopover.
Ive looked at the listings but cant fathom where all these sites actually are mapwise so am asking for recommendations... cheap too if poss, we were qoited 50+ euros at one site I enquired with

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
You could try Bien Assise at Guines which is about 10 miles from the tunnel and pretty easy to find. If the reception and then the bar are closed you can find a pitch yourself and pay in the morning. However it is quite expensive in high season at around €40.
The site we mostly use is in the Caravan Club's Europe guide, have you got that guide? If so, it is listed under Wissant, and is called Les Erables. Used it again last week Friday night, prior to an early departure on the tunnel the following morning. Cost was 11 Euros for the night, but that is without hook-up, and for a motorhome, for a caravan I think it is a couple of euros more.
BUT, it is becoming a very popular site, the 'Full' sign went up that day at about 4 pm, so if you are not getting across that early, it would be worth booking. We have booked it for when we go across again in August, just to ensure we can get in. It is about 15 minutes drive from the tunnel.

I have visited this site and if I recall it has wonderful views across the Channel but is quite exposed.
What puzzles me is why all these sites near the Channel ports are now so full. I don't think its because of a doubling of Brits going to France. I have a theory its all to do with campers needing to have their pets injections done so they now stay stay for a couple of days rather than just an over night or going from inland to the ferry. There is certainly a need for another good quality large campsite ithin 20 miles of Calais. Maybe an opportunity for the Caravan Club

David, yes, that is the one. It only opened 4 years ago, and for the first 2 years, there were always very few people on it. Or at least every time we were there!
A lot of people do seem to be there for more than 1 night, and the location must be one of the reasons, although, as you say, it is very exposed.
You may be right about the fact that it could do with dogs having to have injections. But I must say that there always seem to be a lot of Dutch people on there, certainly the last couple of times we were there.
It certainly went against the grain to book, in the 30 or so years we have been to France, we have NEVER booked, so this is a first. But as we won't be getting to France until mid-evening and it will still be August, we thought we'd better, as I said, the 'Full' sign went up at around 4 pm.
The gate closes at 10 pm, and at half past 10 a motorhome drove up, of course couldn't get in, so parked outside for the night. Next morning when we got up, there was a second motorhome parked there!

In Calais you can park up on the quayside overlooking the channel. Is abt Ikm from Chunnel, park up then go to campsite around the corner to register your pitch. Full of all nationalities. Pleanty of eateries. Last time I used it abt E10 pn, I had a Motorhome the. But at that time if a caravan could unhitch & park in large adjacent beach carpark. This site is great for petowners waiting out the hours before the dog is clear to re-enter Britain. Sorry I cannot remember name BUT it is very well signposted.

Life is not a rehearsal--It's the real thing !
We used the site at Guines this summer, what a lovely site, we stopped one night with the tt and electric plus 2 adults and 4 kids, it cost us around £30. We booked through the c&cc. Would definetly use it again.
Im using a one thats about 30 miles south of the tunnel chateau du granspette im just stopping the one night i booked it about 3 months ago and it cost about 30euros .
We were recommended this one last year while chatting to some other campers. We stayed on our last night before catching the tunnel in the morning (only short distance from tunnel) We liked it and would use it again
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
