Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
When I had a motorhome I have caught a nap, like many others, on the motorway aires. Park up near other vans. Major Aires usually have showers etc inside the toilet area. Obviously be wary of parking up with just lorries or totally alone. The general atitude is that as long as you are not a hazard, then it is generally safer to stop than to drive when tired.
On a wry note, it is not uncommon to see a poor unfortunate parked up in the church square on the night before market day. Poor owners awake to find themselves trapped yntil midday.

I'm no expert , but have seen places where campervans can stay overnight free (aire de camping camping- cars) in most French towns. Usually have a water supply and waste disposal place as well and sometimes loos - often wondered why they can't do the same for caravans - but I suppose Municipal sites fulfil the function for caravans.
You could look here - there is a book available of all these campervan sites - you can also buy it in "Presse" shops
