Not long been back from an eight week trip round Germany. We have been several time before. I am not aware of French style Municipals owned by the local authorities. All the campsites I have used appear to be privately owned. However what you will find in Germany is that sites are often situated on the edge of towns and usually alongside swimming complexes so it seems that at some time in the past the local council have allocated land for that use. On our trip we stayed at 10 campsites and I would say the standards are pretty high but different to what you find in France. Toilet facilities I would say achieve a higher standard than the average in France. The price and how much you pay will, of course, depend on the time of year. One of the site we stayed at cost €30 a night but that was near Berlin. In the main we used the ACSI Card so tended only to pay around €14 a night. Camping Cheques are less well represented in Germany but there is still quite a choice.
As far as I am aware (quite happy to be contradicted) the council sites in France are run by private individuals, I guess on a franchise sort of system !
ACSI - are from Netherlands - and inspect sites and publish a guide and dvd this covers many sites .
some of the sites enter into a discount scheme - and a separate booklet is issued for this
http://www.campingcard.co.uk/gb/en/home/uc33-l2-n253/
which operates out of peak season
easiest way to get a copy of the book and card for the discount - or even the full guide - in the UK is probabky from Vicarious Books - they handle all queries and purchases very promptly

have fun

There is no doubt that a lot of French Municipals have been sold into the private sector recently. However a lot of them still seem to have the local Marie as the base for their administration and on some you still see council workman doing work around the sites. But beyond that you could be right.
We lived in Germany for 11 years when my OH was in the RAF and used our caravan all the time.
Most sites are a similar standard to the U.K. and certainly better than France. A lot are fairly large and well laid out with swimmimg pools and good childrens play areas. Toilet facilities are generally excellent. The same could be said for Luxembourg although the Belgian ones are perhaps not quite so good. Not sure if you have to do this in France, but you will probably have to leave your passport at reception if you do not have a "Carnet" card.
Do you know what areas in Germany you will be visiting? Might be able to give you a few good sites.

When we’re going up a hill of fortune, may we never meet a friend coming down
As with all our foreign trips so far we have no idea where we are going, my wife wants a day in Paris (train in and out) but beyond that we just fancy a different bit of the continent !
Are there many German sites (like France) ?
Thanks for the help.

Yes. There are hundreds. Because Germany has hardly any coastline, a lot of them have man made lakes with sand to create a sort of beach and every site has loads of information about things to do in the area. We never booked in advance, and didn't find that a problem.
German trains are great - fast, clean and generally on time.

We only stayed there in December when visiting the Christmas markets, so don't know what it's like in summer. Last time we were there was 2006 and I believe that they were installing new facilities after that. There is a Greek restaurant on site, and that's really good. It's only about 10 minutes walk into the town of Hameln.
Thank you Ina , i worked around the Detmold area from 1977-1980 , liked the area and the people , they made us really welcome , we got invited around for drinks and dinner many times , allways said i would return ,but it was allways next year
