When we were getting on ferry couple of weeks ago (portsmouth to cherbough) they searched us, well looked in the boot and that, we had a trailer tent then, so car was chocka, god knows if they thought we had someone hiding in the boot?!
We need to change our next ferry booking as just got a caravan, but only cost £10 for each change, hope its not more?
Portsmouth is renowned for checking vehicles, it was on high risk security alerts for some time due to the terrorism threats, we were checked when we came back to Jersey last year too. I told my son it was because he'd had a No.1 haircut and he looked like a thug - hmmmmmmmm not amused!

I have three sides, left, right and wrong - which one are you on?
Check your insurance details too Bios. When I thought my van was 7.23 one company (the AA I think, wouldn't insure me). Turned out mine is actually a little under 7m. The red pennant costs more for vans over 7m.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
C'mon guys this is the age of the computer. When you say what model of van you have, they automatically have the height and length, or at least the more professional ones will have. The iffy bits are the bolt ons like bike racks on the back or on the roof. Most of the check in booths have photocell sensors for height, and it can be a bit embarrassing if that starts squwking.
I have not found that Red Pennant costs more for bigger vans. You do have to ring them if you have a bigger van, but I didn't find out why!. Our van is 7.95 m and we were quoted the standard fee this year.
