I thinks it's down to what area you want to visit,maybe a look at Alan Rodgers France guide will give you an idea of which sites are open at this time of year, though I would imagine there won't be too many, most municipals will be closed over the winter.

We went to Brittany just before Christmas once and they really go to town on their decorations, real Christmas trees dotted everywhere in the towns and some of them sprayed with white spray, others decorated beautifully, plenty of lights to be seen.

I hope you find somewhere suitable because I am sure you will enjoy it.

We've been in Perpignan, Toulon, Millau, and the Ardeche areas, four separate years - not actually over Christmas, but up to the 22nd - and they've all been fabulous in the winter, with Chrsitmas markets, as said Christmas Trees in all the town squares, loads of white lights everywhere, and strange santas climbing up little ladders into windows, or coming down by parachute!!!!

Can't suggest a campsite because we've always stayed in hotels, but I bet some of the winter sports sites will be fabulous over Christmas.
