At that time of year I would just turn up, particularly in France. Also going at that time you could take advantage of discount schemes like Camping Cheques or the ACSI Card.

We usually go in late May/early June and never book.  We take Camping Cheques, ACSI, and this year Touring Cheques too - and have always found sites have plenty of free pitches.

This way, if the weather is poor, or you don't like a site you can simply move on to the next one on your list.
