Hi,

Just been looking on t'internet to plan next years summer holiday and have been amazed by the number of campsites in Argeles sur Mer (near Perpignan, France).

Because of the daunting choice I wonder if anyone who has been to this area and could either recommend somewhere to stay or to avoid!!

Thanks

Hulot

Hi Monsieur.

I have been camping at Argeles, can't remember the name of the site, our Son was around 6 at the time, so I am going back over fifteen years, the site was brilliant with everything a young family needs, I would never go back to that West side of the Med again, the winds in July, were too powerfull, coming down from the Massif Central mountains, my wife was blown out to see in a rubber dinghy, I would have lost her had it not been for the coastguards!. the best place I have found for Sun Sea and ?, is at the East end of the Med, Camping du Pylon, and Camping Le Brague both at Biot close to Antibes Nice and Cannes, couple of hundred yards from the pebble beach, and no wind at all hardly. also not far away we camped for a week at Camping Les Pins Parasols, at Frejus superb site with Sandy beaches about half a mile away, we were even joined one early evining by a snake in the tent, must have been the Madras Curry we were cooking, this time our Son was ten, and did an indiana jones on the snake, unlucky snake! , although my wife (not a lover of snakes), insisted we left the next day, we did and meandered our way back home taking in Italy, and Switerland, best holiday I have ever had.

Hi, I love the east of the med aswell, I remember camping du pylon and that area from 3 months I spent camping down their in 1991. Agay in particular was beautiful and would be an excellent place for your wife to relax on her dinghy being very sheltered!

BUT I also love the pyrenees and like to combine a beach and countryside holiday. Also sometimes the wind is quite nice if its 40+ like this year near Agde.

Thanks for bringing back good memories - I will have to go their again soon

Have been looking in this area for our next year holiday. Enquiries earlier on this message board narrowed us down to Le Haras  and Ma Prairie. Still undecided. We are retired and will be down there in June, so don't know when you'll be there or what your requirements are. Both are in Select Sites brochure ,both are Kawan village. Ma Prairie with 260 pitches.Le Haras is smaller with 76 pitches. Think they're both reviewed on camp site reviews here. We did stay at Cala Gogo some years back and didn't like it a lot. 450 pitches and underground disco but it is straight onto shingle beach. Stayed there in August with teenagers. They also found it a bit overwhelming.

We use a big noisy site -camping le Soleil - a fair walk out of town to the north. Direct beach access - which is VVV important because of the volume of traffic.

Our teenagers adore the place - and if they are happy the rest of us can relax

Monsieur Hulot - depends what you want from a site really. Argeles really does have a site to suit everyone (well almost everyone, perhaps).  Do you need a site to suit children?  Teenagers?  Young couple?  Mature couple?  Group of friends?   What suits one, probably wouldn't suit another!   There are all-singing, all-dancing sites like La Sirene, and quieter sites (inland) like Le Haras (we've done both in our time) - and then lots in between.  Give us a clue what you're looking for - and someone will have the right site for you!

I find Argeles too busy and commercial. Have a look at 'Camping Les Dunes' at Torreilles Plage - just a bit further north of Argeles but within distance if you want to dip into the touristy stuff.

Camping Les Dunes was bought by owners of La Sirene last year, so expect the standards to increase there from next year, its ideally located right on the beach, and its on the Perpignan ring road (med side).

The surrounding area looks like it has lots of activities and other campsites too
