\We have just retuned from a fab 2 weeks staying in a campsite near Markdorf about 15 minutes from Lake Constance, Southern Germany. Campsite was superb with outdoor pool, excellent restaurant and takeaway. shop on site. Showers and toilets where spotless. Laundry room with Bosch and AEG washing machines! Washing up facilites under cover. They also had an excellent children's washing area with todder toilet and urinal and washbasins and showers and babybath for younger children. Again it was spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. This was brilliant as it freed up the adult showers and our kids aged 3 and 6 felt very grown up having their own facilties. Our 3 year old even went and used the shower on his own one particularly hot afternoon. There was also a play area for younger children, football pitch and ad hoc free entertainers like balloon man. The surrounding area had plenty going on. Excellent cycle routes along the lake and lots of boat trips that you could do or go up for walks into the mountains. We travelled down in three days doing 1 hour first as late ferry and 4-5 hours second and 2-3 hours the third and it was more than manageable. People where very friendly and there where no other english on the site, mainly germans and dutch. It made a really nice change from France and I wolud definetly go back. The only slight problem was that germans don't really use credit cards so the visa card wasn't much use as nearly all the places including campsite didn't take them whcih was a bit of a suprise. Luckily we had taken some extra money and used our visa to get money out of the wall.

Nice to have some feedback on German sites. We were in Germany earlier in the year and had a great time. As you have experienced the Germans seem to be light years behind in the acceptance of credit cards but of course it is a fairly simple proceedure to use ATM's. When we first went to Germany in 1992 the only place you could use CC was in some petrol sations but it is gradually becoming more wide spread. The same was true of Austria.
I was based in Germany with the forces and often used German sites. Have found that most of the Knaus Camping have excellent facilities....have been to a site at Bad Durkheim on route to Lake Garda ...was lovely under vine groves ...then at Wurzburg...visited Rothenburg ...definately worth visiting. Overall I would go back to Germany but with only a 9 year old boy...we find that there are no other English kids for him to play with.....maybe a few more years and we will be be back..
what was the name of the site you stayed in? We camped in Saarsburg this year and are looking to return to Germany next year and the site sounds great.
thanks
Mary

I have thought about a holiday to in Germany, I have a friend who lives in Ingolstadt which is near Munich. Funnily enough she is a travel agent and I have never thought of asking her about campsites over there. As a matter of interest, where did you cross from/to and how far was the journey?.
