You need the original docs, registration, MOT and insurance cert for the car if it is yours, along with all parts of your licence. It is a good idea to take a copy with you.
If it is someone elses car you will need written permission from the owners. Have a look on the RAC and Caravan Club web sites for full info.

I don't see anywhere that it says you need your MOT. It appears from all advice given in various sites it's V5, Certificate of Insurance and photocard driving license, does not say anything about paper part.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
You don't really need the MOT, nor do you really need the paper part of the licence. You should only need to show the gendarmes your insurance (originals) your driving licence (original) and your V5 proving that the car is registered in its country of origin (UK). Anything other than that is not required as far as I'm aware for driving over here. The MOT cert. isn't, for sure.
I Have lost my driving license over the weekend, i am travel to france on sunday, i have just spoken to the DVLA, they have informed me that i will have a new licence back before friday, but if not dont worry!! if i get pulled up they will send confirmation to the french police that i hold a full uk driving license, lets hope the DVLA get the there fingers out and sort it, or the police dont pull me as my french is very poor,,,
but the question i have, do i need to show a driving license at the ferrry???

We only ever take copies of our insurance, MOT etc with our original driving licences. Have always only done this for safety, hidden in campervan . Is this unwise then?
Bridie, Gendarmes will almost always insist upon originals, copies are unacceptable as they're prone to forgery. You wouldn't dream of giving a photocopy of your licence to a policeman in the UK, I suppose? You'd get a 'producer'. When driving in the EU, it's often the case that it's impractical to issue a 'producer' to a driver - therefore the need for original documents.
Missed this thread for a while. OK so you don't need the MOT for your car for France. However, you might need to produce it at UK Customs, and yes I know you can produce it later at a police station, but it could save time and effort later on. Having had a friend who had his car impounded at Dover until the original MOT was produced. Thankfully he lived in Dartford so a train journey home sorted it. Perhaps the newer electronic MOTs have eliminated this problem?
With regards to copies, I take a copy as well as the originals, so that if the French Police want a copy they can have it there and then rather than dragging you to the Gendarmerie. At the end of the day it is up to the traveller
