Now I have read the posts and I must admit bit apprehensive of route from clermont ferrand down the A75 mainly because of the gradients thats mentioned. With this in mind would the A20 be a better route for me. I've already planned a first stop at Salbris so it wouldn't be a problem going down A20 and would stop at Souillac and carcassonne. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The A20 would be ok, it is toll free from Vierzon to Brive.

The A75 is not a problem - the gradients are long, but our Mondeo tows up them in sixth gear, and our caravan is no lightweight.  We use it every year, sometimes twice.  Although it's very high, at one point higher than the top of Snowdon, there are no steep hills, just long inclines which carry on climbing.  At any point where you might be slowed down there are extra 'slow' lanes.  Go for it.  The scenery is magnificent, and you'll save on tolls once south of Clermont Ferrand - and get to go over the magnificent Millau viaduct.
