This seems a good way to go.Has anyone had any problems using them abroad ? Are they generally recognised in shops and restaurants?

We will be in France for 3 weeks, and would rather not use acredit card.

Thanks.

These? They're Visa, they'll be fine

It looks as if there's no commission for loading Euros and the cross border fee of 2.75% won't apply if your spending is in the currency you loaded i.e. Euros. But you will pay £2 for each withdrawal.

It looks reasonable, now you can't get a Nationwide debit card any more (without standing on your head).

We have a similar card with Caxtonfx and have used it for the past 2 years with no problems. We draw out spending money at an ATM once a week with a small charge and use it the rest of the time in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels etc with no charge.

I intend getting a pre-loaded P.O. €uro card for use in France & Spain this year and have just checked their exchange rates........question is, as the £ is gaining against the €.....is the rate fixed at the time of loading ( I think it has a bit of climbing to do yet) or does it make any difference?

We got one last year for use in Southern Brittany.  However, we found supermarkets would not accept it because it is not a chip and pin,  It was fine with ATM's, so we just withdrew cash instead.

(It was from Thomas Cook and had the VISA sign on)

The Caxtonfx card is the same type of card issued by Newcastle Building Society. Its a mastercard and is accepted everwhere as it is chip and pinned. We even used it in a couple of 24/7 petrol pumps. Its a eurocard and the rate you get is the rate of exchange at the time that you load it. It costs £10 to apply but this is refunded in euros the first time you load it. We have a 2nd card for £5 for OH but drawing on the same account. If either card is lost or stolen only that card is cancelled. The other card is still usable. A useful backup. The exchange rate is better than the high st, including the PO. Withdrawals at ATM's cost 2 euros so we limit withdrawals to 1 each week for pocket money and use the card for everything else as purchases are free.
