Croatia is a funny one. It can be as beautiful as anywhere. It can also be incredibly tacky. For me it has the idyllic campsite I have ever stayed at AND the most utterly horrible place for a tent I've had the misfortune to encounter. Lots of folk in tents & motorhomes, but not many twin axle caravans on islands 'cos of thin roads and small pitches.

Worth the extra mileage - Yes. It usually is.... if you are bit bored with Brits on French campsites.

Journey - A variety of route options. Austria or Switzerland usually, but you pay for a vignette pass to use their motorways, so a good excuse to stop off here to get "value for money". Then stop off as most do at Lake Bled in Slovenia.

It has something for everyone though....unless you like a quiet sandy beach (such beaches crowded & far north only). It is the first "seaside" for the Austrian nation don't forgot. Lots of naturist sites in the north, filtering down to "mixed" naturist sites and then on the nearest isles via ferry Cres and Kryk, where you can find solitude and some of the most picturesque views imaginable (generally only if you have a two man tent), or the worst tackiest campsites known to man IMHO if you are unlucky.

Then heading south it gets better, as you leave the Teutonic kids behind. It becomes more what is called "discernible" if you are a caravanner. On the other hand, if you are tenter, you can pop across to an island of idyll (avoiding the big sailing marinas areas which are crap for both sailors & campers) or lightly party (bed at midnight) depending upon your taste.

To sum up....great place, but, unless you are a happy-go-lucky types....do your research!

Were just back from Croatia (for the second year running)

Stayed on the island of Krk at a site called Autocamp Bor.......wonderful !!

Prices are cheaper than in the "Eurozone"  (currently getting about 8.4 Kuna to the pound) Eating out is much cheaper than in this country, or indeed most of europe. And thay have real "Pubs" unlike France !   "Molim dva pivo" means "two beers please" (what more Serbo-Croat do you need!!)

Took us 3 days to get there  :

Perth to Dunkerque

Dunkerque to Salzburg (Austria)

Salzburg to Krk.

Definately worth the extra distance.
