Hi all

We have done this journey more than once but last night a forum else where suggested we are wrong.

We are driving from Le Harvre to La Garangoire in the Vendee (starting early on Friday 7th August)  and usually when going to this area we travell via Caen, Rennes, Nantes etc but it has been suggested we should go the Le Mans route.

Is it a better route? Should we consider going this way this year?

Thanks for your help.

HC

Haven't done that exact route BUT have driven through Rennes and Nantes recently...

Don't for heaven's sake try driving round them on a Weekend - there was really bad traffic for no particular reason that I could see (no accidents etc).

I'm trying to remember which of the two it was - but with one of these we queued to get through the tolls and then on the other side of the tolls was an enormous queue with all the lanes merging down to two - terrible traffic both ways which then all of a sudden, 5 miles and 45 minutes later just disappeared. No accident, no roadworks - just weight of traffic. None of the locals looked remotely surprised so might be a frequent occurrence.

Might be better during the week though.

I second HelenaB on that, avoid Rennes and Nantes like the plague at weekends, we've had exactly the same experience! For that reason we generally travel midweek now - you get the lorries of course, but nowhere near the weight of traffic! Doesn't help if you're all booked up for weekend travel I know.. sorry!17

We have always used the Le Mans route to the Vendee from Le Havre - so I can't compare to the Rennes route, it just never occured to us to try that way. Can't complain about the Le Mans route, it's simple enough. Le Mans can be a bit tricky but OK if you stick to the ring road - and it's no worse than Caen anyhow.

The Le Mans route will be quicker but will cost more in tolls.

Why not decide for yourself for the future, go one way and return the other.

We've just returned using the Le Mans route and it was very straightforward, very simple, very good driving.

We did have an overnight stop though... A tiny car and two small kids means long distance drving is not my fave passtime.

BTW - the overnight stop was in a fabulous campsite in Beamont Sur Sarthe. really pretty location and only 11 euros for all of us and huge tent!
