We had a holiday in an apartment in Corsica this year and I wondered how people coped to sleep in tents. I felt we the air con was a necessity in the apartment! It was very hot until late at night and then again by 8 in the morning. Do people find it very hot in their tents? We are planning next year's hols and althought we had thought of going to med, this has put us off somewhat. Equally, last year's rain in the vendee has put us off being too far up! Oh what to do?!

Hi just got back from the med Costa Brava we managed fine at night 2 fans going and no problem sleeping even the 4 year old daughter, at night it was around 70deg and that was in a single axle caravan. zinnia
Like you we were fed up with the weather in the Vendee for the past couple of years so we went to the Med this year in the Languedoc region. Although it was always hot, there was a continual breeze (apparently a feature of the area) which made it lovely and we also had plenty of shade on the site which helped keep the heat down so we had no trouble sleeping.
In contrast, OH and I went to Monaco for a couple of nights last week and there was absolutely no breeze at all so it was roasting and we were very happy to have air con in our hotel room.
Sounds like people that went to the Vendee this year had great weather too - sod's law really!

Hi,
Just back from the Vendee, had two weeks fabulous weather, very hot, over 30C quite a few days. Didn't have any rain. The one day, that there was a shower of rain for about two minutes on the site, we were on the beach and completely missed it.

I would definitely go to the Med. As already mentioned if you are on the coast there is often a bit of a breeze. Careful positioning of your tent on a site with plenty of trees for shade is the most important factor in my opinion. Hate waking up with the tent in full sun. Nightime warmth is not nearly as awful in a tent than in a building. No clothes and just a sheet to cover you if it gets a little chilly. Maybe a fan if you have EHU which we never have.
A canvas tent or at least a tent which has plenty of ventilation.
We've just got back from 3 weeks camping, stayed near Argeles way down South near Spain, and then Provence/Cote D'azur area. First time in a tent and can honestly say that I was amazed how wonderfully cool it was at night, despit it beng over 30 degrees in the daytime. Kids and OH even had a duvet! Friends of ours were stayng in a mobile home neaby and it was stifling in there, so as someone previously said, being in a tent is what keeps the temp down.

We have just spent 2 weeks in salou in our folding camper and although very hot during the day,too hot to stay in the camper for more than a minute or two at a time it wasn't too bad at night. We coped fine with a couple of fans and they were usually switched off around midnight and we slept well. We just had all the air vents open and even had to use quilts in the early hours. I would recommend taking a gazebo so that you have guaranteed shade for eating your meals, even at breakfast time the sun can be very hot. We loved it though and will be holidaying somewhere on the med next year, I'm sick of praying that we are going to get good weather further north and then ending up disappointed. Go for it you will love it.
We got back from spending two weeks in mid July, in the Southern Ardeche this year, very hot during the day, but being in a Cotton canvas tent the nights were very comfortable, I think the folks in the statics (gallery), were not as cool at night, as those in tents, almost all the tents on site were Cotton, with a few Polycottons, not a single Polyester in sight!.

Andy.
Yes, you don't see many polyester tents that far south. Perhaps it is because most of the campers are Dutch and French who prefer cotton canvas no matter how old the tent looks.

There were plenty of Polyester tents on our site in the Med, including ours! Can't believe how many Quechuas there were around. Seemed like every other tent.
The tent was cool in the evening and very comfortable to sleep in. We've done the Med in a static many years ago and I remember having to have the fan on all night and still being really hot.
Like all of the other comments here, I have to say that there is no problem sleeping at night. Just got back from 2 weeks in Trailer Tent on Costa Brava (so good that we have booked next year). In the day it was 35 degrees plus, however, the heat creates a very nice thermal breeze so it was no problem at all - never once felt too hot. At night the sleeping in the trailer tent was very comfortable up until 9:30 am when it started to warm up a bit.
We were also in Salou in July. Very hot on a couple of nights and we (like others) left the fly nets down and the doors up during the night - not a nice sight if passing and chose to stare in BUT it was essential!! Another suggestion is soak a small towel and keep it to hand for cooling down while lying in bed.
One night my OH got up through the night for his business and said quite loudly and with fear in his voice 'Logans gone' - I was out of the pod like a shot (naked!!!) only to find 10 yo Logan sitting on a camping chair fast asleep. He'd got out of his pod and sat in the living area as it was cooler - OH thought he'd wandered off as he still sleepwalks. Oh the trials - blimey though, I wish I had that problem again and was back in Spain!!
