The best road atlas for France is the Michelin, it has the most comprehensive index, available in the UK in bookshops, you may have to wait until about Feb for the 2010 edition. Not that dear at about £12 so worth buying imho. Also buy a large single sheet map of France which allows you to see the overall picture when long distance route planning.
Relying totally on a satnav without a clear idea of where you are going is not a good idea.

If your looking for good single sheet maps of France have a look at "Michelin 726 Grandes Iteneraires France" great for an uncluttered view of the Main roads and Autoroutes, for more detail there is "IGN Nationale 901 France" both are 1cm = 10km, very handy even if using sat-nav.
Thanks to all.. A note made of them... Off into Cambridge this morning
a couple of good places which sell maps, so hopefully I will be able to have a look in more detail at these before purchase. although, not badly priced so I might indulge in a couple.
.
Thanks again
