If you're looking for the end of August what about the sites that have statics for hire? You can get holiday cheques for them I think, along the lines of camping cheques.
We stayed at the Senonches site last year - and thought it very nice indeed. It has some wooden cabins, some Canadian tents, and also takes tourers and tents. The facilities are first class - state of the art bathrooms, and there's a nice restaurant serving simple meals in a beautiful wooden building, with woodburning stove and lounge area - really all rather nice. The village is within walking distance and there was a natural swimming pool, which unfortunately was only in the early stages of operation and hadn't had all the required 'hygiene checks' - but it looked quite inviting. The site is set around a little lake and there are some sunny area, but mostly shaded pitches in the trees.

If you look thru the Huttopia website in the link above you will see the gypsy caravans that they rent out, although they are just variations on a general wooden cabin theme.
Canvas holidays offer Gypsy Caravans, don't know what site though. They sent me a brochure the other day and I had a quick nosy through it. I also notice they have Fairytale cottages (just wooden chalet I think) and a site with Treehouses to stop in. I think that would be rather cool but didn't like the statement (very basic with no gas or electicity)!! Hence I'm a caravanner

Thanks Votlaire and Bossynix I think my problem is I only need one night and most places insist on at least three. We are travelling to the Dordogne and have seen a tree house near Orleans which I am tempted to book for the way down. We are in a tent so are used to basic but at least we have electricity! We are getting the Dunkirk ferry and I think it may end up being a hotel on the way back, but still looking!
