Im just returning to camping this year, from a 15 year lay off. Ive booked the ferry to France and now its a case of checking out the sites. We're going from the 11th July to the 24th July. Do I need to reserve any sites or will it be quiet enough to risk it without booking? Whats all these reservation fees, and do I get this money back when I get to the site. Last time I went I just travelled and stopped at sites that took my fancy, so there was no reservation fee. However, since my wifes coming this year, she'd like to see the look of the sites we may be going to. At this time of the year (July), do you think I would probably get in most sites. Were heading from Calais,to Biarittz area, over towards Andorra, then over towards Argeles then back up the country back towards Calais.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
You are outside of the French holiday season so yes you should be ok. The reservation fee if you do book will come off your site charges.
Have a look also at the ACSI website and camping cheques. You may get some better prices. Consider also using municipal sites. Most are very good and inexpensive.
If you see any you fancy stick the name of it on here. Someone will have been there
last year, we were down in the Southern Ardeche middle two weeks of July, and the site was fully booked all the time we were there, with the obligitory "Complet" sign on the gates!, even this year we are going for the first two weeks in July, back to the same site, and I am told it is fully booked already for most of July, we were hoping it might be a little less busy going at the start of the high season, but I guess not, of course it all depends on the site/region you are going to, as everywhere is going be different, the reservation fee is deducted from the overall cost, so you do get it back, in a way, we pay about 20Euro fee, which is fine for two weeks, I guess you only need to pre-book a site if you want to guarantee getting on your site of choice, if that is not an issue, then you will always find a pitch somwhere, we visited other sites whilst in the area, and many had vacant pitches, although none of these sites would have been once we would have chosen, so glad we pre-booked, we have even got the same pitch as last year for this year, how sad is that!.
Thanks for the replies. Theres a couple of sites that I would like to definately go to, but otherwise I think we'll just meander down there, and pull up when were close to where we want to be. This year Ive decided not to rush straight down to the south, and take things as they come. Hopefully the sun will be shining, the temperature balmy, and the roads nice and quiet!!
