It's probably worth joining the Caravan Club or Camping & Caravan Club. You'll more than recoup the cost of membership on the ferry price. I always use the CC.
Its always best to talk direct to the ferry company armed with a few quotes from competitors.
As a member, I had a quote from the CC as well as P&O. Spoke to Seafrance and got a further reduction on their discounted fare. Beat the CC hands down and got money off my next crossing to boot. The same applied with the RAC on Insurance, a little bit of haggling saw a reduction there too.
Its also best to book a midnight onwards crossing, Arrive at the port in good time and book in, If there's room you may well get offered an earlier boat and with no extra charges. Same applies on the return although check on the French side before accepting as they may try to charge your credit card.
A lot of the French Petrol Stations are unmanned in the early morning and have chip n pin card fuel pumps. Its not uncommon for these to be out of order so make sure you have enough fuel in the tank or you may have to wait till day shift starts. (I nearly got caught out Calais-Paris route.
Motorways have Tolls(Peages) and there is always fair warning, However, if you get a decent map, you can avoid them and save a few Euro's for the holiday
hi tom,as always good advice from the others, i always use the secondary roads because they are far more scenic and after all if you want to find a site that will be where you will find them, not on a toll road.where are you coming from and what part of france do you want to head for.are you booked in anywhere? do you want busy sites? by the sea<.........ps, where is irlam? tom
hi tom, we have a motorcaravan and usually book with the camping and caravan club because they have ben the cheapest. ( the tunnel being the dearest). if you go out of the high season and would want campsites in the deal you should look at the camping cheques. they do the whole package. that is why i asked the other questions. regarding direct bookings with the ferries i find sea france the cheapest. it is really about having your travelling dates to hand and phoning them all. some will give you a better deal if you book well in advance.for last july i paid £177 for our motorhome and my wife and i for 2 weeks. i booked in january. tom

We've come across a really easy way around this.....if you're stuck, wait for a customer with the relevant card, and ask them to fill your car up and you give them the equivalent in cash! Done this a few times now, and the French have been so trusting & obliging they're unreal! It's a really nice change to the sideways glances and comments you'd get at most places over here!

what a cracking good idea , just hope i make myself understood & dont get a punch on the nose instead of a tank of juice ...
Are these credit cards what they use then or like a bank debit card?

We booked Eurotunnel for July/August 2005 in November.
Car and Caravan (over 7m) Travelling to France at 15:00 and returning at 13:30 for £180 through the Caravan Club.
(At the time, you could book directly with Eurotunnel for £196 travelling to France after 14:00 and returning before 14:00 but this offer seems to have gone now.)
The Ferry through the CC was £112, but you had to travel between midnight anf 06:00 and I don't fancy that!
