Can you lot help me, we are going to France for first time with car full of camping gear. Our Green Flag cover want and extra £70 for Euopean Breakdown for year we are only off for 2 weeks. I have had a quote off Insure and Go for a single trip for £25, but looking into policy, if we breakdown on way home and they cant fix the car they will take passengers home with hand luggage and the car will come home when fixed, probably a week later. Problem with that by the time it gets home someone will have helped themselves to the contents of our camping equipment. I would rather they put us up till the car is fixed. No way am I leaving my car with anyone when its full of our gear.

Can any one advise or offer a different company.

At least you are not towing a caravan so you don't have to consider that. The trouble with any insurance the cheaper it is there is usually a reason for that cheapness. I would look at a few more options and compare what you want it to cover and decide on that basis rather than price. Perhaps what you should be looking for is a policy that providesa replacement car for the completion of the journey.

The cheapest way of getting breakdown insurance is to add it to your car insurance at renewal time & you can add a continental option. Obviously the cheaper policies are not so good. If your car is not repairable quickly on the way home you will sometimes get a hire car but I think you have to leave it at the French port & get a UK hire in when you get off ferry.

As stated, they go for cheapest option. If your car is repairable in a day or so they will pay for a hotel. If you are right down in Spain, they might fly you home.

Generally repatration of car is thus. Dutch car transporter collects cars for UK/Belguim/Holland & drops UK cars in compound nr Calais, UK transporter goes over to Calais & collects cars for UK. As the transporters are making rounds all around France it could be several days before car is uplifted.

It has just taken me a week to get a van back from Holland. They did sort out a hire van though which had to be left in Dunquerke.

You get what you pay for I am afraid and its only a problem if you break down. You could try the clubs or europ assist is I think very good but I suspect you will come across the same problem.

Same applies in UK for breakdown - you get what you pay for - I have the basic green flag offering at £20 which is cheap but all they are going to do is attempt a roadside repair or tow me to a garage. Then I think I am on my own. Not a problem if I don't break down!

Does any breakdown cover include trailer in the recovery?

Some do some don't, ie the cheaper ones. Also some that do will only recover trailer if the car is broke down, not if its only the trailer that has broke down. If you are towing you need to check very carefully what is covered before buying the particular cover.

If they do they normally only cover the small camping type trailer as standard.

The cover provided by Insure and Go is Europ Assist so the same policy restrictions will apply.

The two policies are the same Ben. I have used Insure and Go for several years and compared the policies before buying and both policies are the same with identical levels of cover. Insure and Go also offer the same levels of cover as my car insurance company Aviva but they want more than double in price.

We insured with Marks & Spencer 2009, Co-op for previous years - both covered breakdown and either repair/or return home for car, contents and people - don't have a trailer. We'll be testing other companies this year not because we have anything against M&S (any more than we did CIS) but costs do seem to increase a lot in the second year!

i think £70 sounds reasonable, most quotes i have had , including the clubs, is over £100, eventually got it from eurotunnel for £68.
