The weather in Brittany is like everywhere at the moment. It is changeable from one year to the next. We have been several times. The first couple of times was end June beginning July and the weather was warmish (no rain). Because of this we decided to go there when my son was 10 months old in July as we thought it wouldn't get too hot and he would be ok. Unfortunately the weather that year for July and August was really hot up in the 100's nearly every day.
The other place you could go is the Vendee. It is supposed to have its own weather system not unlike the South of France. We have been there 3 times now always during the school holidays and have had good weather and bad. Once we were there for 14 days and it rained heavily for 13 of those!!!! The next time we had glorious weather.
Both places are beautiful and I would recommend both.
I was in Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley last year (2003) , in July /August. We hit two heatwaves, the second of which was hitting 40 degees C at some points. I was there for seven weeks in total and I think we got about six days of rain, only one of which was bad..
The year before I was in Normandy, Brittany and the Vendee for a month in total. We got nearly a week of torrential rain in the Vendee but not a drop in Brittany or Normandy.
It`s undoubtable wetter and colder than the South of France, but in my experience it`s still considerably warmer and drier than here.
In my experience the weather in Brittany and Normandy is pretty much like the South East of England. When you think about it, you are really not that far away. The year I was in Normandy it poured the whole time and was really quite cold, the same weather they had in the South East.

We were there in 2003 during the mega heatwave, but it was only slightly warmer there than at home.
Vendee does seem to have a micro-climate, but it doesn't always work out for the best. This year in the Vendee our weather was mixed, but mostly sunny and warm to hot.
Go further South than the Vendee - Royan area - fantastic weather and beaches. We've been twice in August/September and had great weather. You can drive it in a day from Calais easily if you go on the motorways.
We stayed in the port de la Foret this year in mid August and the weather was very wet but not cold. We also had power cuts, the locals said the weather was unusual for the time of year!!!!!!!! Very friendly place though.

We did France first time this year in August and went to a site near Quimper Brittany. It rained every day but was not cold it was shorts and tee shirts everyday. We still found lots to do and it was a really fabulous place. We will return as we loved it so much. We were told that France had its worst weather for 30 years .We were only about 65 miles from Roscoff so ideal. The Brettons were fantastic and the food was really cheap in the hypermarkets, although beer in the bars was a bit pricey at about 5 euros for a pint. If you drink wine its cheaper so its swings and roundabouts. May go a little bit further south next year just to see something a little different but we loved it.
I think the weather may be a little hit and miss but we dont like blistering heat.
We've been to Brittany first 2 weeks in June a few years ago, fantastic weather solid sunshine whole time, don't know about the South of England but it was way better than the North. The next year went to the Loire at the same time and it was very wet. Don't think there are any guarantees you just take your chances.

We went to Brittany, near Concarneau, about 3 years ago in August, the weather was very mixed, some sunshine, some rain, pretty much what I'd expect from an English summer.
Our friends went to Normandy in August this year and had dreadful weather, I think they only had one day when the sun was out and no rain.
2004 was very wet in Brittany and most of Northern France. Records for bad weather were broken in July and August. We moved south to the Vendee, where it was a bit better.
It was an exceptional year. We have had it very hot in Normandy in August. Like England, you just can't rely on it one way or the other.
If you don't need to book a site (which we never do) the beauty of camping is that you can up sticks and head south, or wherever.................
