I realise the Motorail has ceased in France this year. Anyone got experiences of the Autotrain?

Travelling from Merseyside in August (two adults two kids and big tent) I am wondering whether it is worth the trouble. Car, ferry, car, train.

Also the thought of driving into Paris to drop the car off at Bercey station terrifies me.

Reassurance please!

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

It all depends on those little things - time and money! Which do you have most of (or neither)?

First thing is that you don't have to go to Calais-Paris there are Dutch/Belgian options which would get you to Narbonne or Avignon:  http://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm  These involve ferries from Harwich or Hull which would cut out London .....

There's a lot more info on that site.

I think it is a matter of doing the sums really. The cheapest would be just to drive all the way which would be time consuming and tedious. The quickest would be to travel all the way by train and hire a car at your destination: might not be too expensive if you get the right bookings but lunking a large tent about could be a problem?

Probably handy if you wan't to get your Ferrari or Morgan down to the Cote d Azur in a hurry, but otherwise far two expensive, I don't think many campers would use the service.
