I've changed my car since booking our crossing. So I have 2 questions please:

Will the ferry need to be informed? and [I dont have the V5 [Log book]] yet, so is it ok to go without it?

Many thanks.

You will probably need proof of ownership of some kind.

Just ring the ferry company & amend the reg, they won't charge you. You are supposed to carry the V5. If you don't have it you are supposed to have a letter of authorisation. In practice you probabley won't get stopped, anyway.

And if the car has previously been registered you should still have Section 10 (New Keeper Supplement) of the old V5, which would be better than nothing!    Hopefully you'll get the new V5 in time for your holiday.

I have yet to be asked for a V5. Lucky I suppose. Friends had their car impounded at Dover until they could produce it. Some sort of proof of ownership from the seller should help.

That sounds a bit scary. However I have the bill of sale etc, so hopefully that will be enough.

I have gone over on the ferry in a different car to the one originally booked, no problem, they just amended it at check in. All they were bothered about was the booking reference number.

As for you not having the V5, i'd just be a little concerned in case you were stopped by the Belgian/French police who wanted to see all of your documents.

As long as you take the new keeper section with the receipt for the car it will be fine.

I dont have the new keeper section since the dealer didnt have the V5 when he got the vehicle. Is this a real issue?

Its only an issue if you get pulled up, I've never been pulled up in either France or Belguim. When are you going? If you have just bought the car from a dealer he should have sent details to DVLA & you should get your new V5 thru within 2wks. I suggest you check with the dealer to make sure he has done this.

If the dealer did not have the V5, I presume it was because he had just bought the car at auction & it was ex lease so the leasing co. should send the V5 straight thru to him & he could then notify DVLA that you are new owner.

Whether you are going abroad or not you need to sort this out. If it is a reputable established dealer then there should be no problem.

I got stopped by the gestapo in Germany last year and they wanted to see all 'my papers' Passport, License, Insurance, Logbook, took them back to their vehicle, made loads of calls and eventually let me on my way after about half an hour!!!

Thanks for the replies. I contacted the dealer and he assures me the DVLA are indeed processing the V5 but it was only sent a few days before I bought the Vehicle. I certainly dont fancy being stopped and not having the appropiate paperwork. I think a serious re-think is in order if it doesnt come in the next few days.

Being stopped is unlikely, but unlike all the others who have said it, I have been stopped for a "routine check."
This was in Finisterre, on a Saturday afternoon, just as I was leaving the supermarket. I had 3 friends with me - they all said they were glad it was not them as they did not have all their docs. The gendarmes checked all my docs and the car (including the headlights for those who don't use benders). They were particularly bemused by my old paper doily licence. I gather it is popular on a Saturday afternoon to do some "training" such as vehicle checks or speed traps. You will quite often see them at the exits on major routes.

BTW, if your car is a lease car, you need a form VE103 which you can get from the lease company.

As a stickler for having the correct paperwork and all my ducks in a row, I really believe the risk is more than I want to contemplate. I've contacted the ferry and cancelled  our dates and also the CC club and done the same with our Red Pennant etc.. Full refunds from both. I'm just not prepared to take the risk.

Our destination is still top of our wish list but now maybe just a bit later in the year.

Many thanks to all who helped and advised.
