Depends on the dog! Our old dog would sleep through the ferry crossing ( and most of the road trip too!!) But a younger, more lively dog may not.

Seafrance do crossings in 75 mins from Dover to Calais.

If you can give the dog a good run before the crossing, that would obviously help to tire it out too, so it would be quieter. Otherwise, the Tunnel is a good option.

Tunnel everytime, all that banging and clattering and people walking past the car would just stress our Springer out too much.

We never used to like the tunnel, but they seem to have improved over the years and it's just so much easier and quicker to get over to France!

I've done both. when I had just the one.  Love the tunnel, except it is dearer. It has a better set-up on the Calais side for the DEFRA ritual. I'm also off to Saumur on the Loire in mid-June. Going by ferry because it was one of those newspaper deals where you collect the tokens just after Xmas  &  the ferry was included. Don't worry the dog will just nap. A toilet break walk would probably be appreciated about 15mins down the road though.
