Depends on the dog! Our old dog would sleep through the ferry crossing ( and most of the road trip too!!) But a younger, more lively dog may not.
Seafrance do crossings in 75 mins from Dover to Calais.
If you can give the dog a good run before the crossing, that would obviously help to tire it out too, so it would be quieter. Otherwise, the Tunnel is a good option.
