Travelling Calais to Benodet in August, this will be 1st time camping in france. I have a Vauxhall Zafira with roof box that measures approx 2.3 metre in height. Class 1 toll charges state upto 2 metre in height.
I read something ( cant remember where ) that bikes or roof boxes are not counted in the measurement and it is the height of the car that counts. But on one motoring forum there were a couple of people who had been charge Class 2 prices for a similar car and roof box.
Can anyone please confirm which is correct.

You should get charged class1, Its possible the height beam might mistakenly view you as a van, so go thru the manned barriers rather than automatic so it can be corrected. If you go thru a completely unmanned peage as on some exits then there is little you can do but pay up. I'm sure there is a procedure for refunding any excess mistakenly charged it but it would have to be done in French language.
We've just come back and were using a Ford Fusion with 2 adult bikes on top. We paid class 1 all of the way.
A couple of time the auto ticket dispensers gave the ticket from a slot about 5 foot up (for hgv's). I just pressed the red button at the lower, car height slot and got the ticket from there instead.

We had the same car as you with a roof box on top and always paid the normal rate. Never knew there was another rate for cars to be honest!! Enjoy your first trip - France is so much easier for driving than here and far less traffic so enjoy.

Hi nikkid21
Are there red buttons on all the automatic ticket machines??
We have been caught out by the height of the caravan and had the ticket dispensed from the lorry height one. Didnt see a red button, but then we werent looking for one.
