My wife and I are leaving for Carcassonne (Dover – Dunkerque, early morning sailing) on the August Bank Holiday weekend and want to take an easy couple of days and nights to drive to just south of Carcassonne.

We are in an estate car with a family-sized tent and would like to pick your brains regarding sensible routes and quiet, pleasant places to stay for a night on the way down.

We thought we would go via Rouen, Orleans and Chateauroux as it avoids Paris and would be very grateful for recommendations for a good driving route but, most particularly for good places to stay.

Our time scale will give us a target of 300 miles or so for each leg, leaving us with a relatively short final section.

We particularly like the atmosphere of small, medieval towns and are not at all fussed about swimming pools, tennis courts or similar for the journey down. Camping Municipals would be fine…

Very grateful in advance for all of your thoughts.

Regards

Mr. & Mrs. Ecowoody

On the route you have chosen, if Chartres is far enough south, that's a good place to stay and an interesting town to visit from the campsite.
The night before Carcassonne would probably be in the Dordogne area, there are loads of sites there, and interesting towns, like Sarlat for instance.

I would recommend stopping off at Millau for second night.  Appart from viaduct and town you alos have the Tarn Gorge.

Regards Bob

Many thanks, Franbee and Dandyman Bob.

Chartres certainly looks very interesting. Was it the Camping Municipal that you have stayed at? We certainly are keen to spend a night in the Dordogne as well.

As for Millau, we thought that we would come back that way...

Very grateful for your thoughts – do keep them coming!

All the best

Ecowoody

If you look at the campsite search on here for Chartres, you will get the details of the site. The last reviewer obviously had the same poor experience that we did with the toilet block. Having said that, the site is very relaxed and very well situated, and the showers are usually hot.
