Definitely buy a vignette, you will save the 40 euro cost on petrol, time and sanity.

Switzerland (non EU) is being confused with Austria (EU) where the vignette is only for motorway travel, and you do not need one if you do not use the motorways.

In Switzerland you need one to drive on any road, and if you take a trailer or caravan you need one for that as well.

If you take an animal under the pet passport scheme, the rabies jab (or booster) must have been done within 12 months of entering or leaving Switzerland, even though the jab is valid for two years in most countries, including the UK.

I'm not sure that's true, I think it's only for the motorways http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vignette_(road_tax)#Switzerland

You are right.

They have changed it to come into line with other EU countries (like Austria) since we were last there.

You have to make sure that you do not enter Switzerland via a motorway, or they will charge you at customs. The fine for not having one on a motorway is very severe.

Personally I would not want to go far in Switzerland without the Vignette or Austria either. If such a thing that there is a deviation on the minor road onto the motorway you would be find heavily. It is not worth the risk. Luckily the fees for the Austrian vignette are not high and can be bought for many length of period you are there. Switzerland is just for 1 year only which is quite ridiculous really and is only valid for the year you buy it in, so if you go and buy one in June you only have 6 months. But it is still the same price.
This kept us out of Switzerland for 6 years but this year we re-lented and visited for 1 week. It is a very expensive Country for most things too.
